SOMETIMES I/YOU/HE

sometimes

he worked

to release the old desire

and not start over again.

just once

he looked

at what sat in front of him

and actually saw it.

most days

he’d avoid

simple words that told the truth

about sitting and looking.

MICHAELMAS

warm and sunny today.

I cleaned the feral cat house

and added fresh straw,

although I don’t think she appreciated the interruption.

the garden is starting to get that raggedy look,

spent French beans and yellowed eggplants.

soon it will be time to put away all the stakes and trellises

and start planning next season’s projects.

my roses finished earlier than last year

but the asters are singing right now.
